Why the flight home takes longer, and why fuel is the real limit

Distance is only half the question. What matters is the air the aircraft must push through and how long it is pushing.

High in the atmosphere there are rivers of fast moving air, generally running from west to east, meandering and shifting with the seasons. An aircraft flying with such a stream is carried along by it and covers the ground faster than its speed through the air would suggest. Flying against it, the same aircraft moves through exactly as much air as before but makes slower progress over the surface below. The wing does not know or care which is happening. The passengers care, because one leg of the same journey can take noticeably longer than the other.

Crews and planners treat these winds as terrain to be used rather than weather to be endured. A route may deliberately bend to sit inside a favourable stream, or bend the other way to sidestep an unfavourable one, and the longer path on the map turns out to be the shorter path in time and fuel. This is the second reason a track can look eccentric on a screen: the first is the map, the second is the air itself moving underneath the whole geometry.

It all reduces to fuel, which is the true constraint on any flight. Distance is merely a proxy. What actually limits a journey is how much fuel must be carried to cover the planned route, plus enough to reach an alternative destination, plus a further reserve on top, all of which is loaded before departure and monitored throughout. Fuel is also weight, and weight demands lift, which demands fuel, so every extra tonne carried costs something to carry. Planning a flight is largely the art of resolving that loop with margin left over.
